Waiheke Island
I am not to sure if anyone even still checks this but I will make this post for my loyal readers. The first three months I was here the weather was gorgeous during the weeks... and then turn windy/rainy on the weekend. Luckily that has finally reversed. This past weekend Jamie and I went to visit his Dad who is staying on Waiheke Island near Auckland until Christmas. The island is a 40 minutes ferry ride away, but many people commute to work from it. The night we arrived we went for a nice dinner at a vineyard, and watched the sunset over the city in the distance.
The next day we toured the island. On the northeast corner island there was a secret WWII turret installment. After walking through some sheep fields we made it to the entrance of the underground tunnels. The tunnels linked the two turrets and were surprisingly deep. At one point we entered an Ammo store (we had flashlights) and while we were looking around the door slammed shut behind us!!! Being the clever people we are we realized it was just air pressure, but it sure made us jump... and leave the room quickly.
The afternoon consisted of my favorite things: food and food. After another vineyard lunch and some amazing wine we visited the Olive Festival. At the festival there were heaps of locally grown and pressed olive oils to taste and buy. Outside there was music, art and the freshest oysters I have ever had (Scott start drooling now...) and of course more wine. After olive oil was oozing from our pores we stumbled down to the beach... a nude beach nonetheless to soak up the last of the afternoon sun on the sand and in the surf.
