A bit of a thunderstorm rolled in last night after a full day of rain. Here are some interesting photos that were in the news. The towers lights are quite amazing... they were recently changed to LED (an energy reduction of 66% compared to the old metal halide fixtures) and now it is able to cycle through different colors like a kaleidoscope at the touch of a button. For the rest of June it is red and blue to celebrate the Maori new year.

Foggy Paddle
This Saturday morning I got up for a morning paddle. After my month of illness (sore throat to lungs packed with phlegm to hacking cough to ear infection to ringing ears) it was nice to finally feel well enough to break a sweat.
Practice was a 7:10 start, so no sleeping in this weekend. It was a wicked time though cause it was so foggy. On the water you couldn't tell where the water ended and the fog began let alone see the shore. I took a photo of the dock and fog(above) yet it doesn't do it justice.
After practice I went for coffee with some of the NZ team and we talked about there upcoming trip to Canada for Worlds in Dartmouth. They are quite excited to see what paddling in Canada is like!

Sail Away
This past weekend my co-worker Peter invited me to head out onto the Hauraki Gulf on is yacht. It was a cool morning, with frost on the deck when we first arrived... at 7:00am (no sleeping in this weekend). We headed across the Gulf towards Motutapu Island. There was a 15knot southerly blowing but it was a crystal clear morning. We tried fishing a few times on the way over with no luck, only a few bites.
Once we landed we hiked up the island to see the WWII gun emplacements. The view from the top was awesome!
We had pizza and sandwiches for lunch on the boat and enjoyed the mid-winter sun. Heading back to the yacht club the wind had picked up to 20+ knots and I had fun steering and adjusting the sails. The power of the wind is amazing. I ended up spending from dawn till dusk on the water.

Work stuff
Don't me fooled, that is not a physical prototype, those are images I made on the computer. It is amazing how realistic they look!

Winter vs Summer
Auckland Winter Day (June 3rd)
Low: -2 High: 15
Calgary Summer Day (June 6th)
Low: 0 High: 8
Hmm seems like I am missing a beautiful Calgary summer this year. Last week for the first time since I arrived in New Zealand I saw frost and even had to scrape it off my windshield!!! Luckily they were nice clear days which warmed up quick.
This week we are back to typical Auckland winter weather: rain and more rain, though tomorrow is supposed to be sunny with a high of 18C and low of 11.
